TRAINING AS A FIRE PROTECTION ASSISTANT

Fire protection assistants are staff appointed by their employer to take charge of the company’s fire-fighting. For this purpose, fire protection assistants may cooperate with operational first responders and evacuation assistants also appointed by the employer. Appointment as a fire protection assistant is subject to various legal stipulations (technical regulations concerning places of work, accident prevention rules, etc.).  In every case it is assumed that appointments are preceded by corresponding training on all held fire extinguishers (usually fire extinguishers and wall hydrants). Any additional needs in the companies are determined jointly by the fire protection officer and the company owner. The number of fire protection assistants necessary in a company is governed by its size and risk assessment.

Among others, the responsibilities of a fire protection assistant include:

- preventive fire protection by monitoring any work carried out with fire or heat
- fire-fighting with incipient fires
- operation of fire protection equipment
  (wall hydrants, smoke and heat exhausts)
- instructing the fire brigade upon arrival on site
